BAHAR SHOGHI
Biography
Bahar Shoghi (born 1983 in Tehran) is a French-Iranian photo-based artist. She began her career in journalism and independent documentary filmmaking before turning to photography.
She has participated in various film workshops in Iran and France, receiving recognition at international film festivals, including winning the French Centre National du Cinéma (CNC) Prize as part of the Neighbours Platform, Meetings on the Bridge at the Istanbul International Film Festival. She has also participated in writing residency programmes in France, including a residency at the Fabbrica Culturale Casell'arte in Corsica.
While still in school, Bahar Shoghi explored photography, taking courses at the House of Photographers in Iran and pursuing a distance learning programme with the New York Institute of Photography (NYIP).
This interest in visual narrative manifested itself in her latest documentary project, which involved in-depth archival research. This research prompted reflections on the relationship between visual archival material and its historical context.
These questions led her to adopt alternative photographic processes. In 2023, she immersed herself in the study of nineteenth-century techniques under the direction of Arpan Mukherjee at STUDIO GOPPO, a photography research studio in Santiniketan, India. Currently based in Armenia, she continues to explore the relationship between the philosophy of photography and photographic practice.
